Social Anxiety?

I should be attending my 6th semester of college this fall. I have social anxiety and have to meet with my new academic advisor before I am able to sign up for classes. I was supposed to sign up for classes at the end of april but can’t do it. I have gone to the office 5 times and always turn around at the last minute. I have tried to “just do it” but it’s not working. How can I do this?????

I know I am screwing myself over. That’s why I am here asking for help. If you don’t understand social anxiety, you may not understand that I cannot just “get over it”.

I have emailed my advisor and he told me I had to come in to sign up for classes because it can’t be done over the phone or through email.

I am currently taking wellbutrin and lexapro.

Do yourself a favor, treat yourself to a smoothing drink or treat, think of something humorous or funny, take a few minutes before the meeting to relax, and come prepared with questions and an idea of what classes you want to take. The more prepared you are for the meeting, the more confident you will be and the less time you will have to spend in the advising session, and the more impressed the academic advisor will be with you. I also suffer from social anxiety, although it has gotten better over the years. I use to have severe panic attacks before meeting individuals one on one, and I still do when I have to meet with intimidating professors in their office. But… I have managed to become comfortable meeting with Academic advisors (out of all people), and now I actually look forward to it. Remember you are smart, you are wonderful, you have nothing to be ashamed of. Best of luck.

Anything new will make butterflies in your tummy. But the first step.. as said take baby steps… Maybe think of yourself as the only one in the class. And if you receive any negative comments… Remember you’re not their for them… In fact the course you’re trying to achieve as a profession – The inaction would be a great learning experience dealing with every day people…. LEARNING EXPERIENCE

P.S. I am on medication as well… I feel wellburtin as a sugar pill and leaxapro is a big time weight gainer

do you have a friend that you could just bring along so he/she will make you go and talk to the advisor. you’ve been in college for 3 years how did you register for your other classes? and as a freshman in college you did have to go to orentation you were brave enough to meet people then how come you can’t do it now when your only talking to your advisor.

Ask your doctor for Xanax. I’ve heard it helps tremendously with social anxiety.
