It can be loosly defined as “keeping alive” or “that you have kept us alive.” Shehechaianu is a blessing recited for different occassions, but often when one fulfills a commandment that is only done infrequently. It has other uses as well. The idea behind the word is that you thank G-d for keeping you alive.

This blessing is also typically said when doing something for the first time ever, or for the first time in a season…when you eat that first, delicious, juicy peach of the summer, for example. You are blessing the peach and the thanking God for allowing you to enjoy it.
