Latin is a “dead” language. This means it will never change. “Live” languages change constantly as they’re used every day. New words are added, old words are removed, the meanings of words change. With Latin, everything is set in stone, so you never have to worry about a species name meaning something other than it is supposed to.

Back before computers, Latin was the common language of European scholars, so anyone had access to it who had a Western education. Now English is common, even in Asia, among scholars, so astronomical and computer words are often taken from it.
