In many schools, sixth grade is structured so that students go to a different teacher for each class. We have found that the BEST way to handle the question you pose is to tell the students to come the first day with the following: a folder with WIDE RULED notebook paper, a #2 pencil, and a blue or black pen. These supplies will get them through the first day, and then each teacher can give the students the list of supplies required for his/her class. So, if your borther’s school hasn’t published a list, save yourself a lot of money and just wait you get a list from the teacher(s).
About this time every year I cringe at all the new “gimmicky” items I see on the school supply aisles. The first rule of shopping for school supplies is to remember that these items are more costly, more distracting in the classroom, and usually don’t get the job done any better than the less expensive items.
Two more quick thoughts on the subject:
As a parent I learned to set aside money during the summer so that I would have it to buy the requested supplies when school started. As a teacher I give a prioritized list to help ease the burden of costly school supplies. Notebook, paper, pens and pencils need to be purchased within a day or two; but other items can wait a couple of weeks.
Pay careful attention to the teacher’s description of items. Two common problems on my list are folders and colored pencils. I require my students to have a plain (any color) folder with pockets and brads. I don’t want the cute kittens, or dogs, or cartoon characters, or cars, etc. The type I ask for are easier to store in bulk, less distractive, and LESS EXPENSIVE. As for the colored pencils, please don’t substitute felt tip markers or crayons. The colored pencils don’t bleed through the paper or cover the labeling of maps.
