Usually the school will give you a list.

1. backpack

2. three ring folder

3. pencil pouch

4. dividers for folder

5. peachee folders (not sure if that’s how it’s spelled)

6. erasers

7. pencils

8. pens

there might be more but that’s all I can think of

HOLD ON!!! Forget the advice given so far. I am a sixth grade teacher, and a lot of things suggested so far, are not required or even forbidden at some schools. Each school and/or teacher is going to be different.

In many schools, sixth grade is structured so that students go to a different teacher for each class. We have found that the BEST way to handle the question you pose is to tell the students to come the first day with the following: a folder with WIDE RULED notebook paper, a #2 pencil, and a blue or black pen. These supplies will get them through the first day, and then each teacher can give the students the list of supplies required for his/her class. So, if your borther’s school hasn’t published a list, save yourself a lot of money and just wait you get a list from the teacher(s).

About this time every year I cringe at all the new “gimmicky” items I see on the school supply aisles. The first rule of shopping for school supplies is to remember that these items are more costly, more distracting in the classroom, and usually don’t get the job done any better than the less expensive items.

Two more quick thoughts on the subject:

As a parent I learned to set aside money during the summer so that I would have it to buy the requested supplies when school started. As a teacher I give a prioritized list to help ease the burden of costly school supplies. Notebook, paper, pens and pencils need to be purchased within a day or two; but other items can wait a couple of weeks.

Pay careful attention to the teacher’s description of items. Two common problems on my list are folders and colored pencils. I require my students to have a plain (any color) folder with pockets and brads. I don’t want the cute kittens, or dogs, or cartoon characters, or cars, etc. The type I ask for are easier to store in bulk, less distractive, and LESS EXPENSIVE. As for the colored pencils, please don’t substitute felt tip markers or crayons. The colored pencils don’t bleed through the paper or cover the labeling of maps.

Well most schools will give you a list on what to get, but if they didn’t you should get your brother these things. Lots of paper, those black notebook maybe like three, pencils, pens the ones that can erase. A binder not those big ones but those tiny ones, glue, markers, crayons, color pencils, measuring stick, protractor. Things like that is what he needs, hope you find everything ok.

Most schools will either send out a list of reccomended supplies or have one posted at the stores. (at least they do in my area)

If unsure though just get some pencils and notebooks until school starts and the specific teachers will most likely fill him in on what he needs for the year.
