It completely depends on the school.

It totally depends on the college. Most colleges do not require either test. Some schools don’t require any SAT Subject Test scores, but some require any two or three of your choice. A few schools out there require the Math level 2 exam, and I have yet to see a major school require the Math level 1. In my experience, the Math level 1 is pretty much worthless to take. It’s also harder to do well because if you miss one question, you lose the 800, but you can afford to miss about 6 questions on the level 2 test and still have an 800. You just need to make sure you’ve had Precalculus or its equivalent before taking the test. A lot of schools use Math 2 for placement purposes and totally ignore Math 1. I have never seen a school specify that you take level1, but I have seen it for level 2.

UCs require Math 2 (if math is one of the subject tests you take). Math 2 covers more advanced material (first through fourth year high school math–trig and pre calculus topics are included in additoon to Math 1 topics), but Math 1 only covers the first three years (Algebra 1, Algebra 2, and geometry).

Some schools may require the Math 1 or 2 test (usually the let you take your pick, but if you are applying to a more prestigious college, you will want to do math 2; as I said, UCs require the Math 2 test if you are going to do a Math SAT Subject Test). Other schools may just require or recommend that you take 2-3 SAT Subject tests and let you pick your areas (so you may not necessarily have to do math. The UCs don’t specifically require the SAT Math Subject test, but they require two SAT Subject test scores, so you can take Math 2 as one of your tests if you wish. Or you could just take two other tests (for example, biology and Spanish, or US Hisotry and English, etc.).
