If you can multiply, you can do percentages.

For example: What is %18 of 234?

Follow the “M – SL2” rule.

M = Multiply

S = Slide

L = Left

2 = 2 decimal places

When said quickly, the rule is also known as the “Missle 2” rule.

Anyway, here goes.

1. 1st, multiply the principle (in this example the principle is 234) by the percentage ( 18)

234

x18

——

1872

+2340

———

4212

Remember, 4212 = 4212.00

2. Second, SLIDE the decimal place TWO places to the LEFT.

The 4212.00 now becomes 42.12 and …you’re done!

%18 of 234 = 42.12

Note: The process of “sliding the decimal 2 places to the left” is equivalent to dividing by 100.

x/100 = x%

.65 = 65/100 = 65%

.01 = 1/100 = 1%
