Real Surgeons. 12 years of college. How’s your life?

My boyfriend wants to become a surgeon, but he’s hesitant because he doesn’t want to end up in his mid-thirties alone with no time for a wife or kids. In your experience, can you tell me how much free time you actually have or if you’re even married? And if you’re happy.

well, my brother in law is a surgeon and one of my sons is studying to be a surgeon. They are both total workaholics and have been as long as I have known them… if you are not that kind of a personality type then surgery might be a bad choice.

My brother in law makes a HUGE amount of money… he has a very dedicated wife and four kids – two adopted. He leaves the house at five AM every day and comes home at seven or eight pm. At least now that he is a real surgeon he doesnt spend all day every weekend at the hospital like he did when he was in training – he usually just goes in for three or four hours.

Being a surgeon means that you are literally holding someone’s life in your hands every day all day. If you are not totally dedicated, then this is not a good career choice. But for these two guys, it is the way that they want to live. They wouldn’t have it any other way.
