Reading dry text in books…?

Everytime I read informational books my mind spaces out and I become easily distracted within the first 15 pages of reading.

I then get frustrated or bored and stop reading the book.

Does anyone have any techniques they can suggest to maintain focus while reading…

1) If you know that you have trouble concentrating and are easily distracted, then the first thing that you need to do is find a place that you can study (I could never study in my own room so I either moved to the kitchen or in college the main room in the dorm).

2) It also helps when you preview the section/chapter you are reading so you can organize the information beforehand. You’ll know what the main topics are and when reading can file information under each of these main topics.

3) During reading, you should stop every page or section and reassess what you have just read. Put the idea into your own words or make a connection to something that you already know. I agree taking notes is very helpful. It is also helpful to make diagrams, pictures or graphs to organize your ideas.

4) Since you know that you are easily distracted I would read in smaller chunks (instead of all 15 pages just read like 4 at a time). There is some research that suggests that the more beginnings and endings that you have the more that you remember.

Reading in smaller chunks will require you to plan more but you’ll understand the information the first time and won’t have to spend as much time going back to reread.

Happy studying!

what i do is put a red dot at the bottom of the page if i dont think i read it correctly that way i can keep track of how well i am reading.

one time i had 15 dots on the bottom of the page. thats when i knew i had to concentrate more.

The best advice is to take notes or make an outline of what you read.

Jot down an outline as you read. Or, summarize each section.
