questions about college?

i’m 18 and going to attend a community college next month BUT…i have a crappy part time job where i get paid under the table so i am having to save every last dollar so i’ll have enough for classes and books. my family isn’t going to help. my boyfriend says to go to the financial aid office and it could be paid for but i heard they look at taxes or something from your last year at your job but that’s the thing…i’m getting paid under the table so there are no taxes. i really don’t know what to do. also…about how much money would someone going into the field “medical office administration” make?

First of all you can fill the financial aid form, you will submitt your PARENTS income tax forms and say that you aren’t working. YOu can also look at fastweb.com for scholarships and look at loans.

When filing for aid for the 07-08 year you will need to provide your 2006 income information. If you earned less than $5150 in ’06 then you were not required to file a tax form and can indicate that on your aid application. You will still need to report the income you earned, you just won’t have to provide a 1040 tax form if it was less than that amount. Since it sounds like you will be filing as a dependent student you’ll need to provide your parent’s information as well. Providing the information does not require them to assist you financially but it will be required for you to receive any type of financial assistance. You can complete the application on line at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/.

If you part-time job is so crappy I suggest finding another one, not only because you seem to not like it but also because what your employer is doing is very illegal. Should he get caught you could get in big trouble, not the least be required to back pay all taxes plus penalties plus additional fees. It’s not worth it to try to save a bit in taxes, probably most of which you would get back anyway as a tax refund.

Can’t help with future income possibilities. Talk to someone at the school…either in the career services office or in the academic department…they should have an idea.

Yeah you would normally tell them what you filed with the IRS- not what you get handed to you. In this case you are still of dependant age belive it or not, and your parents tax papers will come into play.

besides that, look online for scholorship applications, or be prepared to get Stafford Loans like many of us did. They are the main way people are able to get through school these days.
