You’ve pretty much got it right. The hierarchy goes pretty much like this:

University

College

School

Department

It varies a little by university. Some colleges break down into Schools, some directly into Departments.

In order to be a University, you must be composed of various colleges.

A community college offers associate degrees. They are not a university because there is only one college.

The University of StateXYZ has a college of fine arts, college of science and engineering, college of psycholgy.

The College of Science and Engineering may have a “School of Marine Sciences.” The “School of Marine Sciences” might have a Marine Engineering Dept, Marine Biology Dept, etc.

That is the most convoluted questions I have ever seen, lol. You definately need to get yourself some higher education.

It depends on the school, but yes. Think about it this way… You have one university. There are a lot of people going to this university who want to learn different trades. Some of them want to be doctors, some of them want to be lawyers, etc. So, within this university, there will be different “colleges” where each person can focus on their chosen major or career. Get it?

I went to California State University Monterey Bay. My degree is in Communications… so, I took classes that were geared to my major.

Here’s what I recommend you do. Go to a junior college for two years and get your general education out of the way. You can get your Associates degree (AA) there. THEN go on to do your other two years at a university. It will save you a lot of money and help you figure things out better.

Good luck!

There are univeristies and there are colleges (many universites are funded by the state & colleges are more likely privately owned) There are colleges within universities… Like I attend Penn State, there is a college of liberal arts, a college of education… ect. These “colleges” are pretty much just a more direct cluster of buildings on the campus that have like majors included in them.
