poem???????
As sweet soothing oil to the limbs of the restless,
As clean ritual robes to the flesh of Gods,
As fragrance of incense to one coming home
Hot from the smells of the street.
It is like nipple-berries ripe in the hand,
Like the tang of grainmeal mingled with beer,
Like wine to the palate when taken with white bread.
While unhurried days come and go,
Let us turn to each other in quiet affection,
Walk in peace to the edge of old age.
And I shall be with you each unhurried day,
A woman given her wish: to see
For a lifetime the face of her lord.
What are all the senses to which the poet appeals?
Identify the concrete language that appeals to each since you have named?
How does the concrete language contribute to the speaker’s definition of her love???
I really dont get this poem please help me????
Thank you so much

i found this similarity ’cause it remind me of the Songs of Songs book from the Bible’s Old Testament
So according to the source:
‘What senses are involved in the similes used to express what the man’s love (lovemaking) is like? Can you categorize them into a couple of groups? Can you find any similar metaphors in the Song of Songs? Note that white bread was a luxury in antiquity, too expensive for the poor. The speaker here (and perhaps the poet) is a woman. What evidence is there that this is a poem to either her husband or would-be husband? “Lord” here has the non-religious sense of “master” or “husband.” Based on what you know of ancient civilizations, is this woman more submissive or more assertive than women in other cultures?”
question 1, 2
it appealin to the sense of tact, smell and even taste in the part of the “sweet soothing oil”
it is appealing to tact with the limbs of the restless –> muscled limbs or stressed muscles
the clean ritual robes to the flesh of gods –> the clean ritual robes appeal to the sense of vision…perhaps the whiteness of the robes ..sense of purity before marriage …there is the metaphor ofthe robes been compare to the flesh of the gods ..it might appeal to the sense of tact..maybe the robes are as soft as the flesh of the gods
the fragance of the incense –> sense of smell –> the incense create a signature of what their home is…recognizing home through the smell of incense
the hot smell can appeal to the senses of tact and smell
the nipple-like berries –> tact contrasted with the taste of beer then contrasted with the taste of wine and white bread
question 3.
the poem might reflect that the speaker is perhaps a married woman. she expresses her love through an undying imager of homeness. her love to this beloved man seems to be unlimited since it is compared with the soothing oil used for the sore limbs ..
She might have married him..or got under some sort of social contract with the man –> there is an allusion of that in the use of the clean ritual robes andthe smell of incense…the speaker and her beloved had stablished their love nest ..since the incense has become their signal to home…and se is perhaps always alert about the incense since it bring her beloved home.
the imagery of the berries provides the imagery of lovemaking ..how the woman is willing to show her love to her man by loving him…and she finds the act as elemental as the grainmeal and beer *what poor people used to eat in order to survive.* and as rich for the heart, perhaps, as the wine and white bread sastifies the hunger of the rich man…so the women’s love for her man is natural and sastify her needs
the love toward this man is eternal and full of affection, because she is willing to stay with this man for the rest of her life –> see the stanzas of “walk in peace to the edge of old age” and the one of “a woman give her wish: to see/for a lifetime the face of her lord” …moreover, she is trying to imply that she her love for this man is undying s
Unhurried would mean relaxed … this is what you wish for in a relationship. Wish to live with each other until they die (edge of old age is death). This is repeated in the last two lines… to see for a lifetime the face of her lord.
It is actually a very romantic poem.
