One of my high school english teachers taught us tricks to remember how to spell 2 tricky words – separate and definite.

He said all you need to remember is the big mountain SEPARATING the 2 parts of the word separate – picture it as sepArate.

And then he said remember that definite is something that has only ONE answer, so picture 1s in the middle of it – picture it as def1n1te.

It seemed pretty cheesy at the time, but I still find myself using those tricks!

The correct way is “definitely”. This is because the prefix of the word is “definite”, not “definate”. So when you’re adding the suffix of “ly” to “definite”, it wouldn’t make sense to just change the “i” into an “a”.

Definitely is Definitely

It’s definitely definitely.

Definite – a word + ly + definitely. I spelled that one wrong for years.

As a poor speller ( actually tested as a dyslexic) I have learned a trick for this word. finite — as in limited — is in the core of the word so spell it de-finite-ly
