When printing a color ad, you have different ways to produce color.

Spot color = you mix different colored inks to create a specific color. Usually a one-color ad includes one spot color and black. Publishers normally have a limited quantity of commonly-used spot colors (red, blue, green, etc). If you ordered an ad with one spot color, you would have to choose from among the colors the publication provides. If you choose a different color, you have to pay more, because the publication has to go buy that ink,

Full color = this is a different printing process. Full-color printing (also called four-color printing) is when a printer uses a mixture of cyan, magenta, yellow and black (CMYK). This is very much like the way your color printer works. With this combination of colored inks, you can create any color.

So, if your ad has only one color (in addition to black), you would pay the lower rate. For example, perhaps you wanted a red headline to highlight your ad…then black text. If you didn’t like the publication’s red, and wanted a different red, add 10% to the $650, or $715.

If you wanted to run an ad that featured a picture of your house, this would have to be a full-color ad, and would cost you the highest rate.
