Need Help with math problem Please?

How do i do this math problem. I’m confused. Could someone please explain it to me? Thank you.

Science and medicine. It is estimated that the Earth is losing 4000 species of plants and animals every year. If S represents the number of species living last year, how many species are on Earth this year?

Last year population = S

loss every year = 4000

so this year you will have S-4000 species

WOW i am reall good at math and i cant figure this out…. S is for last year so S- 4000 but that still dont say how many is living today B/C you dont even have a number that was there last yr or a number of species that is alive now????? all i can think is maybe they just want to see how you solve it S-4000 is all i got sorry
