Mr. Taranto- Syracuse U finance major asks….?

Syracuse U is ranked 42nd in the country by US News. It has not been ranked since its new state of the art building opened last year. I am a focussed student who is taking advantage of every opportunity possible. I feel as though the middle of the road ranking of the school may be a large obstacle to hurdle. What approaches do you recommend? Also for grad school, what stats do you suggest put me in contention to go to a Top 10.. or even 15 school? What sort of spin can I use to promote my new focus after achieving a 3.97 GPA during my second year of school (in an undergrad business program) in retrospect to my lackluster performance my first year in college (undecided major & over the top social life) with a 3.2 GPA. This will be a flaw in my record too as I approach the next levels. I intend on finishing with very high grades for my last two years of school. Mr. Taranto- your advice would be greatly appreciated. I read your answers daily and I feel our college experiences are similar?

I think we’ve seen this question before, no? One thing that really matters is what you are going to grad school to study. I mean what field. If it’s medicine or law, then you’ll probably just need to keep your grades up and do well on the standardized tests. If you are thinking of something like graduate school in chemistry or physics or engineering, then what I recommend is shoot for something like a 3.5 or better, and make sure your in-major GPA is even higher, and get involved in undergraduate research because grad school is all about independent work.
