I believe most graduate programs that use the MAT for determining admittance look for a standard score of about 400. I received a score of 429 and was in the 88th percentile. That means I performed better than 88 out of 100 people who have taken the exact same test. I say “exact same: because I think there might be 5 different version of the MAT.
So your 60th percentile means: you have performed better than 60 out of 100 who took your test.
My experiences:
I was used to A is to B as C is to D
I realized that many of the questions would not fit this pattern, so I had to restructure the way I looked at the analogy; which was incredibly frustrating. Once I retaught myself to think about how the associations could be put together, it was just a matter of getting a really good prep book (I used Barron’s) and taking as many practice tests as possible to reinforce how to think about the associations. Also, I studied all of the information in the back of the book about culture, math, nature, etc. You will be happily surprised that much of the information in those glossaries are actually on the test in some way.
I took the test on-line which was new to me. I found it to be nice, however. I was the only one in the room so it didn’t feel like a high-pressure situation.
