Med school graduates?

I want to be a pediatrician and go to med school but I get grosses out with surgery, incisions, etc. Do you still study that stuff even th ough that doesn’t fall under a pediatricians job? If you do than what is that part of the course like?

Thanks so much

Peds are MDs first, and everybody learns the same thing in med school. Future surgeons, psychiatrists, or pediatricians all take the same courses; you specialize after you get your MD when you do your internship and residency.

Just wait until you get to Gross Anatomy (yes, that’s what they call it), where you have to dissect a human corpse. You start with the feet and work up. As the last step you uncover the face and take that apart. Ugh! I couldn’t have done it.

Upon graduation from college, you have hopefully done well, taken the MCAT, and been accepted into med school. That’s the ideal situation. If you didn’t do as well as you had hoped undergrad, you can definitely go on to graduate school and get a Master’s to improve your application, and give you time to get your MCAT up. So, you can go directly from college…or… you can go to graduate school before med school. Just depends on how it all pans out for you. I hope you get into med school first to get it over with. By the way, there is no way that person above is a med student. That doesn’t even make sense.

Yes, you cover everything pretty much in rotations and dissections. You will be desensitized to all of those things very quickly, and soon it won’t bother you. And I think you may be getting ahead of yourself a little bit, most people that actually become doctors change their specialty a lot before making a final decision. I had a friend that started in Orthopedic Surgery and ended up in Psychiatry. And medical school is a big commitment, so make sure it is something you absolutely want to do, and if you do go for it, be the best damn pediatrician you can be.

Not to mention PEDS do all the things “gross” stuff doctors do, they just do it to kids.

Best of Luck

Who told you what a pediatrician’s job is? Interview a few before you make that kind of statement again.

Some do circumcisions, all would lance boils, remove foreign objects that kids get up their noses or into their skins.

Of course, you have to learn “that stuff.” I wouldn’t trust my children to a pediatrician who didn’t know it, even if they just needed a vaccination.
