They used to be called junior colleges. Besides their academics, community education classes and vocational programs were added to evolve into community colleges. I attended community college by choice. I earned 2 AA degrees, before earning my BA at a private university and my MA at a public university. I had outstanding professors. The counselors were very helpful and encouraging. There are athletic programs, theater, campus organizatons and student government that provides social networking and an opportunity to become involved in school politics and meet other students.

The main advantage was economics. The tuition is the lowest of all the college systems. English 101 at a community college has the same textbook and curriculum as the one at a prestigious private university. The only difference is the price of the class and the name of the school. The classes are smaller and more organized. The instructors are more personal. Class discussions are encouraged. Each instructor has their own syllabus, classroom expectations, and absence and grading policy. They have office hours and are available to help and guide their students. Student services include assessment financial aid, EOPS, and career placement. You don’t have to take the SAT’s. I met many students that started out at a university and came home to attend the community college to save money or start over fresh. The community colleges have transfer centers to assist students transferring to 4 year schools. They have tours to state and private universities every week. Tuition is $20 a unit in addition to parking, services and health fees. Books are anywhere from $50-$100. Used or new. You can resell them at the end of the semseter. Many times you can buy them online for cheaper prices: www.amazon.com. There are fee waivers for tuition assistance and some colleges have book loan programs.

Many prominent executives, educators, professionals and politicians began their school careers at community colleges. They are no longer considered dumping grounds for people “not smart enough” to get into universities straight out of high school.

It’s high school with smoking allowed outside, a little less official and more relaxed, usually no seating charts or assigned seats (not always). They still take role (they get Federal funding). Fewer absecnes allowed. No being sent to the Principal if you are late. You miss too much class you get dropped or given an incomplete. You get put on ACADEMIC probation which means one more try and you’re out if you don’t get it up and do the job.

You have to buy your own text books (some cost as much as $50).

You have to pay lab fees for some classes on top of tuition.

In a MAJOR you are expected to eat breath and sleep the department, whatever it is

You are not allowed to use the Encylopedia Britanica as a reference source.

You are expected to go to the Library and RESEARCH things.

When given an assignment in like, Politics, they LIKE it when you try to support FACISM or COMMUNISM and give a good arguement backed up by research. They actually LIKE it when you say AMERICA is SCREWED and here’s why I can PROVE IT and you give a DECENT attempt. They gigle and love it.

You are TESTED before entrance to see where you need to be placed in Math and English

If you do poorly in English 1 they will send you to places like “the composition clinic” to learn remedially.

It is a more relaxed high school where the teachers don’t really bug people about texting and talking, because everyone there is there for a reason. They may ask you to turn off your cell phones but if TEACHER gets a call he won’t moan if you BUG him about it and call him a MOM’s BOY.

College is a vollentary thing.

You don’t go to even a JC unless you want to learn more.

It’s just like a regular college. Community colleges are not universities, but the courses taken at the colleges are transferable to universities.

Sometimes professors at the universities are busy with their own thesis to actually teach the classes. They have Teacher Assistants teach instead. At the smaller colleges, actual professors do their own teaching.

The classes are more intimate. In fact, community college is the best route to go if you are not familiar with the university setting.

Check out a community college the next time you pass one on the road.

Honestly it is a lot like high school with a couple of important exceptions,

*People are there to learn and get an education.

*They don’t care if you are there or not.

*You can schedule classes from morning til night, at your convenience.

*Discipline is not something that is needed in Community Colleges.

*Credits will forward to most state schools, it is a great way to get a couple of years of college done in a much more economical way while you can still pursue a job or whatever.

Honestly. I’m glad I started here because I got to test the water by taking core classes here. While doing so I learn about myself in terms of study habits, what studying techniques work for me, what my interests are, and where I want my life to go as in profession wise. Some people argue that community colleges don’t have the budget of some other schools, and that’s true, but all core classes are really the same everywhere and high budget does not account for one’s willingness to learn. Only you can make yourself learn. I think that made sense? : < ]
