is there an advantage to having multiple associate’s degrees?

Almost 10 years ago now when I was still trying to figure out what I wanted to do, I was adviced to take as many general ed courses as possible since they are common to transfer to other schools.

Nine+ years later, I realize I took so many courses then that I’m 3 classes shy from an associate’s in Psychology, and 2 from an associate’s in Languages (French). I’m thinking to go for them if they’re so close. What do you think??

It’s not that easy… particularly because of the 10 years of elapsed time. Many colleges will require you to take a minimum number of hours before awarding you the additional degree. The requirements for the degree might have changed, as well so you might be faced with taking additional course work to satisfy the new requirements.

Frankly, unless you can parlay your multiple assoc degrees into a meaningful credential it would be of negligible value to complete them.

It’s good that you’ve found the motivation to do additional course work but I would recommend that you focus your efforts on bettering your current position or advancing to a new one.

Perhaps completing additional course work could make you eligible to get a professional certification of some type. You could also work toward a certification(s) WITHOUT the coursework and make better use of your time.

Another possibility – if you truly feel that your past coursework is of substance – would be to look into getting papers published. You might have gathered enough expertise through course work and thru work experience to get papers published. This could beef up your resume as much as multiple assoc degrees.

Only if you want to use the associates for a specific trade – i.e. respiratory therapy. If not, you should see if your associates degree classes transfer to a university and get a bachelor’s degree.

I would recommend you pursue a Bachelor’s degree. An associate degree these days don’t mean much.

It depends on the individual looking at your resume.

If you completed both degrees I would commend you for your accomplishments. What I would expect to see next is a pursuit of a Bachelor’s Degree in at least one of those areas.

Never stop learning. Never stop earning.

Go to college and get a real degree. 10 AD’s are not worth a single BA or BS.
