Is the term TRIFLING a curse word?

That’s what I was taught growing up. & then during my Sr. yr. in high school, our English teacher said that trifing is not a word.

& I was also taught that HELL was a curse word.

Why do people on here keep saying trifling is a word that is looked down on?! It basically just means trivial or inconsequential. At my school, we all have to learn a certain list of words every year (supposedly they’ve all been on the SAT) and trifling or trifle has always been on the list! I don’t get why your teacher would say it wasn’t a word or why some might think it was bad.???

First things first. Your English teacher is wrong, wrong, wrong. Trifling is a word. Here is what the dictionary definition.

Main Entry: 2trifle

Function: verb

Inflected Form(s): tri·fled; tri·fling /-f(&-)li[ng]/

Etymology: Middle English truflen, triflen, from Anglo-French trufler to trick, talk nonsense

intransitive verb

1 a : to talk in a jesting or mocking manner or with intent to delude or mislead b : to treat someone or something as unimportant

2 : to handle something idly

transitive verb : to spend or waste in trifling or on trifles

– tri·fler /-f(&-)l&r/ noun

synonyms TRIFLE, TOY, DALLY, FLIRT, COQUET mean to deal with or act toward without serious purpose. TRIFLE may imply playfulness, unconcern, indulgent contempt .

————————————————————————————

That said – I LOVE proving teachers wrong. Trifling is not a curse word. Hell can be a curse word and is often used as one. Even I, who am perfect, have been known to use hell as a curse word. Hell also can NOT be a curse word.

No, trifling is absolutely not a curse word. It simply means “frivolous” or “trivial”. Judge Mathis uses it frequently on his TV show, and he couldn’t if it was a curse word. As for Hell, it refers to a place described by the Bible. But depending on the way you use it, I suppose it could be used as a curse word. And yes, it is a legitimate word.

It’s not a curse word. It’s just kind of looked down upon. Basically it’s just an insult. And by the way hell can be used as a curse word, but if you’re refering to the actual place, then no, it’s not.

Hell as a destination is not a curse word, but as an explicative is.
