Is the People to People Student Ambassador Program a good program?

I have been “invited” to go to Italy and Greece, I have already done a little research on this program. Which leaves me wondering, is this a legitimate program, or does everybody get these invitations? How much does it cost? Plus everything else that seems to go in this category.

Most people get invitations if they are good students. You can be recommended by a teacher, a past P2P participant, or their parents. I’ve gotten invitations since I was in 5th grade, so I think the invites come every year after your first. The programs vary in price. For high schoolers, programs range from $4,449 (alaska) to $8,799 (classic europe). Most programs last about 3 weeks, some shorter and some longer. Also, if you do choose to go on a P2P trip, you do not have to go on the one you were invited on. You may go on one of your choice. For European trips, expect to pay somewhere around $6000.

Our daughter went on this program, and it is indeed legit. She stayed with host families in England, France, Denmark and Holland and had a super experience. Often the program includes a chaperone from one of the schools the participants come from [hers did, anyway…the French teacher] so it is definitely an OK program and has been around for many many years. Have no idea what the current costs would be – you should be able to find out pretty easily.

Nice fringe benefit: daughter really enjoyed her Denmark host family and is still friends with one of their kids–who has come to visit her in Maryland several times since then. The host families are of every kind – she had a policeman’s family in England, a dairy farmer’s family in France, an architect’s family in Denmark and a teacher’s family in Holland. Check it out further as to costs, length of stays, etc. As I recall, daughter’s visits lasted about a week to 10 days each…she was gone 6 to 8 weeks, as I recall.

my friends have gone on it and loved it. i got jealous bc i really want to travel. that is my passion and unfortunately, my family doesnt have enough money to support me for that. i dont know if people to people has financial aid bc if they do i would totally go for it.

and for anyone else who knows, how much DOES it cost? i know it depends but i have gotten invited a lot of times and im dying to go but if its too expensive (My parents are saving for college) then just forget it. I am so sad though haha.
