Is a State University Degree just as respected as receiving a degree from a Division one school?

I am currently a student at a four year state college and am thinking about transferring to the University of Minnesota-Twin cities and was wondering does it really make much of a difference in jobs and applying for grad schools if your degree is from the University instead of the state university?

All that’s going to matter is that you have a degree and experience. AND it has to be accrediated.

That’s it.

You could get a degree from a school in Alaska that no one has heard of and you would still get ahead in life.

Yes, a degree from a state university is just as respected. Often you actually get a better education from many state university than some of the big name universities. You generally have smaller class sizes and the classes are actually taught by the professor and not mostly a teaching assistant. At state universities you actually get to know your professors and they get to know you. Big universities can have up to 300+ students in a class in some instances, There is no way a professor can teach and grade classes of that size without the use of teaching assistants.

Would I trade my state university degree for a big name university degree? Not for all of the tea in china.

my girlfiend believes a state university degree is inferior. She is probably right because the tuition at a division one school is more But a degree from a state university with a 4.0 grade point average seems of more value than a division one school with a 2.5 gpa

It depends on your field. The reputation of a school is of more value if you’re going to be a lawyer, engineer, or doctor. If you’re going to be an accountant, business manager, teacher, etc. than it doesn’t really matter, just get the degree the best way you can.
