Interview disaster?

I went on a teaching interview. The committee was running behind, so we waited over 2 hours. While we were waiting, an interviewer (man) came out with each candidate and went into the men’s room. He was slurring his words, walking a little different, and looked off. One woman said she thought he was drunk. Maybe he was really tired. When in was my time to go into the room, I went in and introduced myself. He was seated almost directly in front of me. The other 3 ladies were to my left. The man was slumped in his seat and was fallling asleep during the interview. I was so distracted and embarrassed. I didn’t know what to do or say. The man actually feel asleep ten min. into the interview and no one said anything to him. The other three ladies gave him looks, but that was it. They had to WAKE him up to see if he wanted to ask me anything. I’m angry this happened and feel it was so unfair. They should have asked him to leave, or something. Am I wrong? Now what?

No, I would be incredibly insulted.

First of all, you have to ask yourself again, is this really a company/school you’d like to work with? If their other employees are so distracted and disorganized, is that something you want to be a part of?

If you still decide that is a palce you’d like to be, it is definitely fair to contact the school directly. Discuss your thoughts and experiences with the HR department, the principal, etc. Request another interview.

Chances are that everyone else interviewed responded to the man the same way you did. I would certainly be uncomfortable.

Wow… unprofessional on their part FOR SURE!

You say YOU were embarrassed– I can just imagine what those other ladies were thinking. hehe… they were probably embarrassed as well. Ack.

The good news is that the situation was beyond your control and you did the right the by plugging away and answering their questions. I’m not sure this is the kind of place I’d want to work. It sounds unprofessional AND unappealing. But, first impressions can sometimes be deceiving.

Yes, they should have asked him to leave. For his sake. For their sake. And, above all, for the sake of the candidates applying for the job.

I hope the interview went okay for you– aside from the weirdness of their part.

There’s a good website I found with lots of information on teaching interviews and jobs… maybe it will be helpful to you. http://www.teachinginterview.com

Hope the next interview is better for you.

You’re right to be offended. Not sure you could or should do anything about.

I wonder if he was the dept chairman?
