Be sure you’re transferring for the right reasons. I’ve seen a lot of students unhappy early on in their college experience… say in year 1 or 2. The truth is, things are usually dramatically different in year 3 & 4, so making a decision on Year 1 & 2 can be a mistake.

So how do you figure it out…? I suggest that you sit down and discuss your goals and such with some faculty members in your department. If you don’t know enough of them, start with the Department Chairperson. S/he will point you toward others if they can’t help you personally. Anyway, talking with the faculty members will get you the chance to get a glimpse of the future at UCLA and from that… you can figure out if it’s right for you.

I’ve been very sad to see some of our best first-year students leave because of things that *I* knew were going to change for them, but they didn’t. Worse still is when I know that they’re likely to have the same experience somewhere else. UCLA is a great school. I’d be hesitant to leave there unless I was certain that things would be better elsewhere. Good luck!

Just another nickname
There’s no point in staying at UCLA if you are not happy with the quality of the education you’re receiving. My advice would be to take some time off and do A LOT of research on what colleges offer good writing programs. Find out what courses are offered and read the descriptions. Also, find out who’s teaching these courses.

You may also want to enroll in some writing courses like the ones that are available here: http://www.mediabistro.com/courses/

good luck!
