It is “fort.” For it to be pronounced “fortay,” there would have to be an accent mark over the “e.” It is derived from the French word meaning “strong,” and I can tell you that they DEFINITELY don’t say “fortay!” 🙂
There is a term in music that is spelled the same and IS pronounced “fortay.” That is why everyone gets confused.

Wow I just looked it up on dictionary.com and Sam is right it really is Fort. However due to so many incorrect uses of the word Fortay is now the standard.

The pronunciation is “for-TAY”, “forte” technically has a top-right to bottom-left slanty line over the “e” but it has been common convention for some time now to omit the accent.
