If dumb is spelled………..?

maybe because of the differing definitions. dumb is obviously speechless and dummy an idiot or something you stick in a babys’ mouth. if dummy as a sound was a word linked with dumb then maybe the spelling would be similar

….because “dumb” is actually a different word than “dummy”. Dumb means not being able to speak. A dummy is like a puppet.

Somewhere along the way we jumbled all this up to mean the equivilent of an “idiot” for both words.

thats a good Q lol..but i think its becus dumb sounds more rougher then dummy…

the b would be hard so you have to make it silent in order make it sound right. Of course I have always wondered about ox and oxen, live as in be alive, live as in live music no wonder english is confusing to foreigners.

I think there is a rule in english where any letter before “y” has to be pronounced for example..
