I purchased McGraw-Hill’s 400 Essential SAT Words, and I noticed that the copyright date is for 2004.?
Is this book still any good for the 2008 test?

The vocabulary words on the SAT are usually of a difficulty that is slightly above the normal person’s vocabulary. There are about 2000 of these words and while the ones that appear on the test vary from test to test, they will always be from this group of 2000 or so words. Therefore, your book is fine.
A really good book is “The Wizard of Oz Vocabulary Builder” by Mark Phillips for $2 on Amazon. It has 2000 SAT vocabulary words stuffed into a rewritten Oz book. Each word is highlighted and a definition is provided at the bottom of the page.
Another good format is the Extreme SAT Vocabulary Flashcards Flip-O-Matic by Kaplan for $1.50 on Amazon.

That book should be fine, the vocab words on the SAT do not vary greatly from year to year, even from 2004.
