I plan to attend to a Art College, do they check your GPA and grades?

Ok, I’m VERY talented in drawing, I plan to major in Illustration and Cartooning. My GPA isn’t that great, will they also check that? Will i have a better chance being accepted with my portfolio?

By the way, my SAT scores came in exellent, but i plan to take it again in October for a higher score.

How much weight they give to your grades depends on whether the school is a traditional art school, such as the School of the Art Institute of Chicago or RISD, or if they are an art school that is part of a broader university, such as the one at Syracuse or RIT. Normally, art schools that are part of a wider university place more weight on grades and SAT scores than traditional, pure art schools, which will place more weight on your portfolio instead.

In fact, some traditional art schools don’t accept SAT scores, or weigh them a lot less heavily than a traditional university would.

But yes, they do check your GPA, and if they accept SAT scores, they do check those. But at a traditional art school, it’s really your portfolio that’s going to get you in. If that’s strong, your high school grades can be a bit weaker than they would be if you were applying to a comparably ranked university.

Have you been to a portfolio day yet? These are days where admissions folks from art schools come to a local school near you, and you bring your portfolio for their evaluation. They give you advice on what you need to do to your application and to your portfolio to make it strong enough to be admitted to their school. They also discuss their school and etc. It’s fun, and the events are packed with prospective art students, and tons of colleges attend. I’ve given a link, below.

Yes, they will check everything, but your portfolio will go a long way to getting you in.
