I need help solving this math problem……………?

every student who studies art in a certain school receives exactly one of the grades A, B, C, or D. If 1 over 5 of the students receive A’s, 1 over 4 receive B’s, 1 over 2 receive C’s, and 10 students receive D’s, how many students in the school study art? Explaination is highly recommended,don’t just give me the answer.

A’s = 1/5 = 20% of the students

B’s = 1/4 = 25%

C’s = 1/2 = 50%

50+25+20=95%

This means the remaining 5% get D’s. there are 10 students who make up this 5%, so we ask the question: 10 is 5% of what number? (let that number be x, which represents the total number of students who took art.)

x * .05 = 10

x=10/.05

x=200 students that took art.

note: you multiply by .05 because that is how you express 5%

Not positive but to me it would make sence that 21 students study art because the second number in every bunch of numbers I think would explaine how many students there were in that certain conversation, so I would ingnore the first numbers and just go on the second ones.

ok so let’s start w/ writing the equation: (x=# total # of students)

1/5x + 1/4x + 1/2x + 10 = X

(now u have to find the LCD *least common denominator* in order to have the same denominator for all the numbers & add them up easily)

20 would be the LCD

Then:

1/5 becomes 4/20, 1/4 becomes 5/20, 1/2 becomes 10/20, and 10 stays the same.

So:

—> 4/20x + 5/20x + 10/20x + 10 = x

—> 19/20 x +10 =x

(then you have to subtract 19/20x from both sides, in order to get x by itself…. it chancel’s itself out from the left side of the equation, & it’s subtracted from x on the right side)

—-> 10= x – 19/20x (now find the LCD for x’s again)

—-> 10= 20/20x – 19/20x

—> 10= 1/20 x

(then you have to get rid of the denominator in order to get x by itself…. & in order to do that you have to multiply both side by 20):

20 X 10= x

200=x (total # of all students)

Now it gets simple, in order to find the # of students who got A’s you gotta plug in 200 instead of x & so on:

# of students who got A’s: 1/5x ===> 1/5X200===> 40

# of students who got B’s: 1/4x ===> 50

# of students who go C’s : 1/2x===> 100

& 10 ppl got D’s which was already given in the problem

& if you wanna check yourself, you can just add them all up & see if it adds up to 200, which was total # of students.

40+50+100+10= 200

you need to find a number that can be divided by

5, 4, 2, or 10, leaving no remainders or fractions.

The smallest number that will do that is 20.
