I’m writing an essay for law school applications. I’m having writer’s block … What do I say?
They all ask the same thing: “write about a time you overcame diversity”. Should I include humor? Would that help my admission or would they not take me seriously?

This is not the time for humor. Write down five times you overcame adversity on a piece of paper. (Hopefully you did not overcome “diversity.”) Choose the one that you think makes you look like the Phoenix rising out of the ashes.

Well, you don’t want to be flippant, but don’t be too boring and self-serious, either. Let your unique voice come through in your essay, and tell them something unique about you and the experiences that have formed you.
Start by brainstorming.Think about difficult experiences you’ve had and challenges you’ve faced, how you overcame them, what you learned. You want to be able to show the committee that you are a person who takes initiative. Show that you are self-aware, etc. Think of a list of experiences first, and then either focus on just one or draw connections between a couple of them in your essay.
(and I suspect you mean “adversity,” not “diversity.”)
