I’m researching universities and wondering what kind of criteria I should have in narrowing down my options?
What should I be considering? School size, student population, courses offered, location, cost of living, accomodations, etc.? What else?

– do they have a good reputation for the subject you want to major in(do you want to be taught by the best or the mediocre?)
– how much will it cost (you will pay more for an out of state college than an in state college)
– are they accredited (do you want your degree to be worth something)
– are the a research school (in california that’s a UC) or are they practical application school (in california that’s a CSU)

You should definitely consider almost all facets of the institution. You will be spending the next 4 years of your life there and it will have a profound impact on your future. You want to make sure you make a good choice. Courses and majors offered is key, you want to choose a school that offers what you want to study and is known to be good in that area. In addition, cost is a big issue to many people. You may also want to look at where it is and the type of climate. Some people like small campuses where they get a lot of personal attention while others like large campuses so they can meet people. In addition, some people like party schools while others would rather focus on their grades. Everything matters! Make sure you research your school before saying yes.
