If you are 24 (born before January 1, 1984 for the 0708 school year FAFSA) then you would now be considered an Independent student and would only have to supply your financial information when applying for financial aid.

Schools will use the COA (Cost of Attendance) as well as your EFC (Expected Family Contribution – a computation based on the answers you provide when completing the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid)) to determine what type of aid – scholarships, grants, or loans – for which you would be eligible. If you have an EFC between 0 and 4110 then you will be eligible to receive a Pell Grant (and maybe an ACG (Academic Competitiveness Grant) or SMART grant depending on some additional factors).

Do you know which school you want to attend? Talk to a financial aid officer at that school to see what information/guidance they can give you.

Good luck!

don’t give up, nowadays it’s reallly important to get that degree!! Check with your schools financial aid office, there are tons of scholarships awarded (not just academic) that you could qualify for. There’s federal and state financial aid that is awarded based on family size and income. Then there are government subsidized and unsubsidized loans that are given at a lower interest rate than most financial institutions. I know it’s difficult and scary to do once you’ve been in the job market but do some research, and if you truly want it bad enough you’ll figure out a way to do it. Also community college is a great, and affordable place to start (you didn’t mention if you already had some college experience). Most 4 year colleges/universities will accept transfer credits from an accredited community college, so you can start there and then transfer those credits to the 4 year school to complete the bachelor’s program.

At this point, the government considers you a non-traditional student. The university probably does too, meaning that you get all the perks that minorities get. So, depending upon what your taxes were, the government will award about 3 times what your tuition is, half at least in grants (free money) and the rest in loans. Go to the Financial Aid office and talk to them, and also go to www.fafsa.ed.gov and start the paperwork. Good luck.

im a hopless student also (or will be)

on my fafsa i have to be born before 82 or 84 to get more of a loan, but my mom has to sign it. but she has never done sh!t for me, i’ve been on my own for years. They must think she’ll help pay for my school..ha fat chance…

But to answer your question (sorry, just had to vent a little about my own financial issues) I’d go through a credit union, I was given that advice. I heard they’re likely to give someone a loan, including people with poor credit (like myself). Or else go to fafsa and see if you can get a pell grant or any other kindof grant/loan.

Most of the time if you are 24 or older you can get a pell grant. You can aslo get a student loan if you don;t mind the thoiught of having to pay it off after you gradutae. If you have good grades, there are always plenty of scholorships.

Good Luck!
