I have a ton of clubs and organizations.. which should I put on my college applications?

my college applications ask for clubs and organizations that i have participated in and list them in order of importance..

however ive done different clubs each year .. maybe one or two that i have done for two years…

so should I put every single club even if it was one year- ?

or do they not care .. and i should probably stick to the important ones?

Stick to the important ones. Honestly, colleges don’t care if you were in a bunch of clubs for just a year or two each. Doesn’t impress them at all. Anyone can sign a signup sheet. What they want to see are clubs in which you actually did stuff. Maybe some leadership roles, maybe some community service. That kind of thing.

It’s better to be in just one club and to have gotten into a leadership position in it than to be involved in 50 different clubs and sports.

If they ask how long you have been involved in each club, first list the ones you have been involved with the longest. If you have held any leadership positions, those should also take priority. If they do not ask how long you have been involved in each club, list the ones you care about the most first, or the ones that you believe best portray your personal self. College admissions can oftentimes be a game, and you want to set yourself apart. This is a way of marketing yourself: if you are involved with clubs that highlight your strengths and unique charactaristics, list them first. Others should go later on the list, if at all. If you are involved in an excessive number of clubs, admissions officers may believe that you are non-commital or even trying to pad your resume. If it starts to look like a laundry list, trim it down and stick to the most important organizations.

Stick to the important ones. Also, make sure you are involved in the clubs you put on your applications during this year, your senior year. Having a ton of clubs might look like you cannot commit to anything, so that might be a negative on your application.

However, if you are in Honor Societies, do mention all of those, in addition to your clubs.

As far as my college application, I only had one club that I was heavily involved (excluding a Foreign Language Club–but colleges will consider them to be a joke) in, but I was also in three honor societies, and President of one of them, so I mentioned all of that. I also mentioned that I had about 90 hours of volunteer experience outside of school. That was about all I could say about myself–I was not involved in any other clubs for a significant number of years. But I still was accepted to all the schools to which I applied.

Also, if you have work experience for at least a couple of years, you should mention that–that’s as significant as being in a club for years.

Along with honor societies, another exception to the rule might be sports–if you participated in three sports each year, that is acceptable–sports aren’t in season all year long.

i would say to put the ones on that you have been involved the most and/or the ones that are most significant to you personally

put the ones you held leadership roles in and those you were in for the longest. don’t go with more than five or six in a list…unless your leadership roles were spectacular. don’t name them if it doesn’t do anything for you. ask youself…will this sell me?
