I’d like to hear from other mums that have done/are doing homeschooling in Western Australia?

How did you get started? Those who took their children out of high school (year 8) to be Homeschooled? West Australian internet sites? Places to go for resources?

I’ve read from over 20 world wide internet sites and am sure this is what I (and my Husband) want for our children, I’d just like some ‘local’ information. We live in the southwest but go to Perth often.

Please Help!!

Virtually all the mums here are from America. I’m 14, been home schooled for all but a short stint in Primary 3 but we’re from SA. I know of no aussie mums who post here (except to ask other “how do we get started” type questions)

You might want to try asking your question on the message boards at the Home Education Association (Australia) site: http://www.hea.asn.au. They’re the umbrella group for home education in Oz and could probably answer all your questions or at least put you in touch with other home educating families close to you who can.

There’s also a support group called “Home Based Learning Network” based in Subiaco but serving non-Metropolitan areas of WA. Their contact details are on the Home Education Australia site.

You might also want to contact SIDE (the School of Isolated & Distance Education up in Leederville, Perth) http://www.side.wa.edu.au and pick their brains about the best available resources for home schoolers etc. Plus, your kids should be able to sign up for some of their correspondence courses if there’s something that particularly takes their fancy.

Also check out your local library’s school service: we pay $110 a year and get their unlimited help with resources, syllabuses etc. Plus it means we can borrow books for up to 12 months at a time instead of the normal 3 weeks – helpful if your kids are using them in their studies.

Finally you might want to consider getting in touch with your local branch of ICPA (isolated Children’s Parents Association). Your local SOTA (School of the Air) (???Kalgoorlie) should have the contact details. Those mums are the real experts when it comes to home education!!
