First off…the correct FAFSA website is www.fafsa.ed.gov . Remember that the first word in FAFSA is Free so NEVER pay for submitting your applications (vultures!).

Secondly…talk to the college’s Financial Aid Officer, or the granddaughter may have too. May schools have preferred lenders which can really help by having lower rates.

Good luck!

There are many options your granddaughter has for college.

Here are the steps she needs to take:

1) She should first fill out the FAFSA. This will determine if she is eligible for financial aid. Go here:

http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/

2) Once she is eligible for aid, choose a government-based student loan. The best loan to get is a Federal Perkins Loan. These have low interest rates and the government will help you pay it back as long as you stay enrolled in school. You also don’t need a cosigner or good credit for it. For more info go here:

3) The next best loan to get is a Subsidized Stafford Loan. This has many of the same benefits as a Perkins Loan. Learn more here:

4)You or her parents can also help her with a Parent Plus Loan. You can find out more here:

5) She can also try to get a grant or scholarship, which is free money that she won’t have to pay back. Look here:

Well, unless you are planning on borrowing for her, you, yourself, are not able to apply for aid for her unless you have adopted her (legal or casual guardianship does not make you her parent for financial aid purposes). You should direct her and her parent(s) to the financial aid office of her college of choice immediately for assistance, while it is very late to apply for the fall 2007 semester, there are still monies available, but she may need to either enroll in a payment arrangement or wait to enter until the January semester at this point.

I’m pretty new to this myself, but this is my source of financial aid.

You may apply and be approved online. Have your tax records handy.
