There are a lot of assumptions that would need to be taken for this question. Are you a full time K-12 teacher or a part-time college instructor? If you are a full-time K-12 teacher you are ineligible from receiving unemployment benefits in most states. This is because you have “reasonable assurance” of employment for the next academic year. Most school districts will even send out a letter to teachers at the end of the year telling them they have a position next year. They can then prove that they gave reasonable assurance if you would claim unemployment. You’re much better off either splitting your pay over the entire year or finding a side job over the summer anyway.

P.S.- Rather poor punctuation and grammar for a school teacher… scary.

No. An individual is only unemployed if they have no job and are actively seeking one. As a teacher, *you have a job*, regardless of how it pays you. You’re just being paid your annual salary over 9 months (the school year), instead of twelve.

Depending on the school system, you may be able to alter your pay schedule to be paid over 12 months, so you have income for the summer.

Not if you are under contract, regardless of how many months you get paid. You are considered full time employed and are ineligible for unemployment.

Yes I am here!!
no they will tell you that the school system has the ability to move your payments to a 12 month payment plan so you get a check each month. yes it is lower but it is 12 checks rather than 9.

Not unless your employment has been terminated. If you have been told you will not return in September then you are unemployed.
