how to strengthen my grammar?

1. Use English workbooks such as you can buy in teacher’s supply stores (or even in Walmart, though their selection is not as wide). Find those that focus on using verbs correctly. Verbs are necessary to form a complete sentence, but you have to use the correct verb in terms of both tense and subject/verb agreement. If this doesn’t make any sense to you, then you do need help!

2. If you are an adult, you can take some classes at the local community college. The guidance counselor can direct you to classes that will help you, either at an “English as a second language” (ESL) level if that applies to you, or “English Composition 101” or something like that which will reteach basics you should have gotten by middle school. There may also be free ESL classes offered locally by your community.

3. Borrow books on CD (or books on tape) from the library, and read the books as you listen to someone else reading them aloud on the CD. Use headphones for maximum benefit. This will help you develop a great sense of the correct way to say things grammatically, as well as increasing your working vocabulary. There are books available on many topics and at many levels.

4. When you watch movies, turn on the subtitles so you can see the words as they are spoken. This will help you to get more out of the movie, but also improve your knowledge of correct English grammar.

5. Don’t be afraid to practice your skills with others. What you practice is what you perfect. You just need to be careful to practice *correct* grammar, so you strengthen a “good” habit. If you carelessly use *incorrect* grammar, you will strengthen a “bad” habit.
