How to start a conversation with an Instructor?

I am taking this project course in September. The Course Coordinator assigns the groups and topic…and not so randomly. If he likes you, he will assign you a good group with an easy topic. Therefore, it is important to get on his good side.

However, I have never met him. Most of the other students have met him in a previous course. I want to e-mail him so that he at least has heard of my name and perhaps have a chance of getting in a decent group.

What should I e-mail him about? I don’t want to sound too fake. The course is pretty much just the project and lectures once a week. There are multiple instructors that will teach different seminars during the lecture slot. There’s no textbook. I have not found anything in the course content that is worth of e-mailing for. He doesn’t have any significant research and does not have any other positions at the department that I know of.

I’m out of ideas!

Just email him to say that you’re happy to be in his class and are looking forward to the upcoming semester. Ask him if there are any on-topic materials he recommends that you read because you’re really interested in the subject matter. (He’ll eat that up.)
