How to run a string quartet?
we are a high school ensemble in year 7, self-established. we get music from the arts dept and we consist of 2 x 3 violinists, cello n bass.
since we self conduct, what are good points on running an ensemble?

Usually the first violinist is the “conductor”– as in gives a nod or an exaggerated lift of the bow to let everybody know when they’re starting. (Or whatever player is starting the piece, pretty much, if the first violinist isn’t starting. Or somebody who is easy for the other members to see!! Or just the bravest member of the group ๐ )
But remember, this only works if the player has everybody’s eye contact BEFORE the bow lift. Otherwise, you’ll just hear a couple of unfortunate solos, and then scattered notes that aren’t together at all! ๐
And make sure that the nod/bow lift is in timing, and that you make the timing clear to the other players, so that the gesture is not coming from out of nowhere.
Have fun and don’t get frustrated.
Good luck with your ensemble!!!!!
Hope this helps.

One of you has to play “conductor”…use nods in rhythmic timing.
