How many years is in a university in the UK?

The course I want to take says “3 years” so I’m wondering what that’s all about… I thought it was 4 years.

Most bachelor’s programs in England and Wales are 3 years. Some are 4, depending on whether they have a year abroad (all foreign language degrees) or a year in industry (some engineering degrees). There are some programs where you can take 4 years of study and bypass a bachelor’s and go straight to a master’s degree.

In Scotland the degrees usually take 4 years.

Keep in mind that in the UK, degree programs are more specialised than the US. You would not have to complete the general requirements as in a US degree, such as English, history etc, unless you are studying those subjects. You would also not get degree credit for subjects unless they are relevant to your degree, such as ‘art appreciation’ for a science degree etc.

You choose your major when you apply to the university and transfer between subjects is not always possible.

Before applying for a UK degree program it is best to contact the overseas student admissions office at your college of choice and make sure that the standard of classes you have taken at high school is sufficient to succeed in the UK type of course. UK students generally narrow to 3-4 subjects for the last 2 years of high school and the university classes are designed (especially in science subjects) to pick up from that point. They generally assume more prior knowledge…
