We were just talking about this in Art History! The left side was known as the evil or ‘bad’ side, and you were forced to write with your right hand. If you were left handed that hand would have been tied behind you and you were forced to learn to write with your right.
We also learnt that the Italian word for left is ‘sinistra’ – sinister.
