Due to their bone structure, they can’t make much headway vertically.

One of our recent projects at work was for a new cheetah enclosure at the local zoo. To satisfy safety requirements, the surrounding fence only needed to be 2.5 metres high (if I remember correctly.)

Clearly this will be comfortably over the maximum height that a cheetah is likely to achieve, so assume they can reach nothing more than 2m maximum.

I’ll check the actual figures when I get to work tomorrow and post a definitive answer for you.

ADDENDUM : Yep, I did indeed remember correctly. 2.5m high fence, so that will be at least 20% above what the World Cheetah High Jump Champion is likely to achieve!!!

Hope that clears things up for you.

One interesting aspect of cheetah anatomy is that they have no collar bone. This means they can’t jump very high, because landing would put too much stress on the chest and break bones.

Cheetahs are designed for great horizontal speed, not for vertical maneuvering. Leopards are better at climbing trees and jumping vertically.
