How does Federal Work Study…well, work?

Would someone please explain? While familiar with the concept and secure in the knowledge that I’m eligible for it, I really am clueless about how it actually functions. (I also realize that it probably differs from college to college/university etc.) Thank you!

Work study is a need based financial aid award. It is considered self-help because YOU have to do something to get the money…and it costs you something. In the case of work-study, it costs you time.

The college will list eligible work-study positions. These positions are usually professional (office work). You apply for the position, interview and if you get the job you can work up to the amount of work study awarded. For example, if you were awarded $2100, you can earn up to $2100. If there are additional work study funds available, you may be able to request an increase in your award, and thus the amount you can earn. If you do not earn all of the money you were awarded, then you don’t just receive the money cash.

You don’t have to be eligible for workstudy to work on campus. However, workstudy positions are paid through a government program and so the positions don’t cost the department you work for money. Additionally, when you file your FAFSA the following year, all of the money you earned under the workstudy program is ignored when it is included on worksheet C.

I know that’s a lot of information but I hope it helped.

Unique
all work studyy programs r the same at all colleges, you work about 20 hours a week working in departments where they need help. pay is not the good, but it is enough for books and supplies. When I was in college in 1997 I had two work study jobs on campus which is very rare. Get to know the faculty on campus and they will put in a good word for you.Trust me.
