How does auditing look on a college transcript?

I’m going to Marshall University this fall on an academic scholarship that requires me to keep at least a 3.5 gpa (3.8 is preferred). As such, I don’t want to take more than 14-16 credit hours per semester. My schedule is pretty locked up with a science major/minor and a second minor in spanish, but I’d love to take some political science/sociology courses. How does it look on college transcripts if you audit lots and lots of courses? I mean, does it look bad, or does it just look like you were interested but didn’t have the time?

It depends on what you want to do after college. It will probably look ok to employers unless you want to get a political science/sociology job, but grad schools won’t like it too much. Conveying to people that you were interested but didn’t have the time is not really something you want to do–they’ll probably start thinking you get easily distracted.

I think the same goes for pass/fail, but it will probably look a little better to take things pass/fail if you can. That way, you can actually get credit for taking the class. Taking something audit just means you were there, but it shouldn’t really count as credit.
