It’s pronounced “mahr-terd” and is the past tense inflection of the verb martyr, which means to make a martyr (noun) of someone. E.g., Many of the early saints were martyred for their faith.
–noun
1.a person who willingly suffers death rather than renounce his or her religion.
2.a person who is put to death or endures great suffering on behalf of any belief, principle, or cause: a martyr to the cause of social justice.
3.a person who undergoes severe or constant suffering: a martyr to severe headaches.
4.a person who seeks sympathy or attention by feigning or exaggerating pain, deprivation, etc.
–transitive verb (used with object)

MART-rd, with the accent on the first syllable. The root word is martyr, so you just add the “ed”. I’m not sure if martyred is even a word, since martyr is a noun, and martyred would be an adjective. However, lots of similar words are given a different part of speech for emphasis, so often times a noun is made into an adjective or verb. Confused? So am I! 🙂
