This actually has a lot more to do with biology, but when a new organism is discovered, it’s immediately classified in accordance with the Organization of Living Things (Taxonomy): Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, and Species, (from general to specific). These really long names that biologists seem to just “come up with,” are actually two-word names consisting of a Genus and species. For example, in the term, Homo sapiens, ‘Homo’ is the genus, and ‘sapiens’ is the species.

Once they can determine the genus of the organism, they can then assign it a species name. Usually this involves looking for some unique feature that distinguishes it from the other organisms of the same genus, and the name usually has a root of scientific, Greek, or Latin origin.
