If it’s a long essay, check the first and last paragraph. The first paragraph usually contains the main point of the passage and the last contains a summary of the whole thing.

If it’s a shorter piece of text (encyclopedia), try to create a one or two word title for each idea in the paragraph. For example:

(1)Once numbering in the millions, the African elephant population has dwindled to between 470,000 and 690,000 individuals. (2)The elephant is now a protected species worldwide, with restrictions in place on capture, domestic use, and trade in products such as ivory. (3) Elephants generally have no natural predators, although lions may take calves and occasionally adults. In some areas, lions may regularly take to preying on elephants.

summary: Because of people (3), elephant numbers are going down (1), so laws were created to protect them(2).

If you’re trying to paraphrase information for a research paper, to avoid plagiarism:

read the text

cover it up with your hand

explain what the text is saying (without looking at the text)

write down your words

Actually, the last paragraph always summarizes the whole passage, also the first sentence of every paragraph summarizes the paragraph itself.
