Use the local daily newspaper….most have a “Newspaper in Education” program where they will deliver them for free to the school. This activity is great for a Reading class and a Journalism class.
Social Studies, especially “recent study” for ex. if you are studying Civics, the teacher might hand out local news paper and might tell the class th look @ the bills trying to be passed and look it up by “friday”.
Newspapers are always better in the classroom (unless a fasion class then tabloids can be pretty interesting…) 🙂
Tabloids tend to be a little “against people” if you will.
I hope this help and if it doesn’t ask teachers what they do.
What grade are you looking for? What subject?
In upper elementary grades, on neat thing to do is to cut out articles and cut the paragraphs or sentences out and then have the students try to put them back in the correct order…you may want a photo copy of the original, to help you. You can also do this with younger children if its done with a short story.
You should choose carefully b4 doing it, coz some newspaper are biased. Choose the most popular one.
tabloids are smaller than newspaper compared by size and information. The articles on tabloids are under summary form.
use ads as examples of a type of writing and have the students write ads
examples of caption writing…then students write captions for ads and pictures cut from newspaper
use math to determine how long a movie runs
use grocery ads to work out what could be bought with a specific amount of money
thankfully there little or no interest of the subject matter or content so teaching is a breeze
