How can MIT/Caltech tell if a student is interested in science and math?

Tell me examples of what they look for too.

PS: SAT / PSAT / ACT doesn’t show that you are particularly interested in science and math…..

(I’m assuming you’re in high school)

Well, they can look at your transcript. If you have a lot of science and math classes, especially advanced ones, it shows that you have some interest in science.

What extracurriculars do you have? Like…are you in some sort of science club, math league, do you work/volunteer at some place that has to do with science? Note this in your resume on your college application.

Also, on the essay section of your app, you can include something that says what your interests are, especially if the essay topics deal with that. Try to get one of your science or math teachers to write a recommendation for you, and they can explain your interest for the subject(s).

So, yes, if you are devoted enough, colleges can see if you are interested in any particular thing, including math/science.

Sure they do. Get an 800 on your Math SAT, a 36 on your Math and science ACT, get 800s on your SAT subject tests in Math I,II and all the science ones and they’ll assume you’re interested in those subjects.

Other than high scores on standardized tests, you can always join a competitive math organization if your school offers them. A science fair might also be a good activity to put on the app. Be sure to take the hardest Math and science classes your school offers as well.

Writing about math or science in an application essay might also show interest and even getting recommendations from math and science teachers might say something about you.

While I cannot say what they look for, I can say it’s mostly money that most people look for…

And that is kinda like math. Addition is encompassed by the Subject. And interest too.

But seriously, why not build something cool. But be darn sure to get credit for it. I designed a really cool airplane once. It looked like a Submarine, but it flew really well. That was all well and good until it crashed. Luckily, I did not get credit fully for that. (Never use two by fours as landing gear struts on your Submarine / boat / plane – bad idea, they haven’t the durability needed…)
