My personal opinion is that vocabulary is acquired by reading and then writing a summary of what has been read. The written summary should include new vocabulary from the piece read.

Read books, and keep a journal. This way you get practice using words in context. While reading a book do keep a dictionary nearby, so you can lookup vocab as you go along.

You can listen to books on tape and do lots of reading.

Read fun stuff so you won’t get bored. That will help you in spelling. By listening to books on tape you will hear the pronunciation. Listen to talk radio shows also.

Read, read, read, and… write as much as you can too. Find pretexts to write; anything.

Open the dictionary each and every time you find a word you don’t understand.
